A difusão política e religiosa da imaginária cristã

Resumo

Resumo: Até o início do século VI, o cristianismo rejeitou a utilização de imagens vinculadas ao culto. Tal proibição se baseava, a princípio, na tradição hebraica, matriz do cristianismo, e na utilização de imagens em outros credos, em dispa- ridade com o cristianismo. A reprodução imagética constituía uma ameaça à genuinidade do culto ao Deus invisível dos hebreus que havia se manifestado visivelmente aos cristãos. Essas duas premissas têm por finalidade salientar que a discussão sobre o emprego de imagens no culto precede o cristianismo. Ao longo dos séculos, outras culturas exerceram influência sobre o cristianismo e a utilização de imagens vinculadas ao culto cristão acabou sendo adotada como estratégia expansionista do cristianismo, que se difundia para além das fronteiras étnicas e políticas. Este artigo acompanha a utilização da imaginária devocional na sua trajetória de Constantinopla à América, passando pela Europa.

The political and religious diffusion of the Christian imaginary

Abstract: Until the beginning of the Sixth Century, Christianity rejected the use of images linked to worship. Such a prohibition was based, in principle, on the Hebrew tradition, the matrix of Christianity, and on the use of images in other creeds, in disparity with Christianity. The imagery reproduction was a threat to the genuineness of the worship of the invisible God of the Hebrews who had visibly manifested to Christians. These two premises are intended to emphasize that the discussion about the use of images in worship precedes Christianity. Throughout the centuries, other cultures exerted influence on Christianity and the use of images linked to Christian worship ended up being adopted as an expansionist strategy of Christianity that spread beyond ethnic and political boundaries. This article accompanies the use of devotional imagery in its trajectory from Constantinople to America, through Europe.
