Manifestac?o?es populares no Rio de Janeiro do se?culo XIX. A queimac?a?o e a malhac?a?o do Boneco de Judas

Resumo

Resumo: Este artigo analisa uma antiga e persistente manifestac?a?o popular religiosa cato?lica, cuja origem e? marcadamente europeia. Trata-se da queimac?a?o e malhac?a?o do boneco de Judas no Sa?bado de Aleluia. Ela vai ser estudada na cidade do Rio de Janeiro durante a primeira metade do se?culo XIX, especificamente, mas na?o exclusivamente, a partir dos quadros e desenhos de pintores que a representaram. Destacam-se, nesta ana?lise, dois elementos centrais: a matriz anti-judaica desta manifestac?a?o popular; e a pra?tica racializada que se instaura no ato de queimar e malhar a efi?gie de Judas entre a populac?a?o branca e negra na cidade do Rio de Janeiro.

Abstract: This paper analyzes an old and persistent popular Catholic religious manifestation, whose origin is distinctly European. It deals with the burning and beating of the effigy of Judas on Easter Saturday. It will be studied in the city of Rio de Janeiro during the first half of the nineteenth century, specifically, but not exclusively, from the paintings and drawings of the painters represented. Remarkable, in this analysis, are two central elements: the anti-Jewish matrix of this popular event; and racialized practice that is established in the act of burning and beating the effigy of Judas between the white and black population in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
